Tencent Acquires 20% Stake in Shift Up, a Korean Gaming Company

Tencent Holdings has acquired a significant 20% stake in Shift Up, a prominent South Korean video game development studio. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, this investment positions Tencent as the second-largest shareholder in the company behind the successful game Goddess of Victory: Nikke. Notably, Goddess of Victory, which was published by Level Infinite, a subsidiary of Tencent, achieved $100 million in consumer spending just a month after its launch in November. This move underscores Tencent's relentless pursuit of expanding its presence in the global gaming market. Earlier, in August, Tencent, along with Sony, acquired a combined 30% stake in FromSoftware, further solidifying its position. Additionally, Tencent increased its stake in Ubisoft through a €300 million investment in Guillemot Brothers Limited, which holds a 13% stake in Ubisoft, bringing its total stake to 49.9%. The company also invested in Triternion, the studio behind Mordhau, and has reportedly shifted its focus towards acquiring majority stakes in foreign companies, marking a significant strategic move in its merger and acquisition activities.
