Germany's USK Introduces New Age Rating Criteria to Address Online Risks and Loot Boxes
Germany's video game rating authority, USK, has revised its evaluation process to account for various online risks when assigning age ratings to games. The updated guidelines, effective January 1, 2023, will consider factors such as in-game purchasing options, online interactions, and loot boxes. While the presence of these features does not automatically lead to a higher age rating, the independent rating committees will assess whether they justify a more restrictive age category. The committees will examine factors like the need for players to provide sensitive information and the implementation of protective measures, such as parental controls. Over time, a set of best practices will emerge regarding the impact of usage risks on age ratings. The USK has also expanded its rating labels to include more detailed information about a game's content, such as the age rating, reasons for the rating, and details on additional features like online purchases and chat functionality.
