US Lawmakers Seek Information from Gaming Companies on Combating Extremism

A group of US lawmakers has written to major gaming companies to inquire about their strategies for addressing online extremism. According to Axios, the letter will be sent to prominent gaming firms including Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, and Sony. The move is reportedly in response to the Anti-Defamation League's recent report on hate and harassment in online gaming, which highlighted a rise in exposure to white supremacist ideologies and identity-based harassment in online games. The congressional inquiry seeks to obtain details on the systems gaming companies have in place to combat extremism, as well as data on disciplinary actions taken against players who violate community standards. In a statement, US Congresswoman Lori Trahan emphasized the need to hold gaming companies accountable for their role in shaping the online environment, particularly when it comes to protecting children.
