GameStop Undertakes Further Staff Reductions

GameStop has implemented an additional round of staff reductions, preceding the scheduled release of its quarterly financial report on December 7. According to Axios, the layoffs have affected multiple employees involved in GameStop's blockchain initiatives. At least six staff members from the engineering and e-commerce departments have been let go, but the total number of affected personnel is unknown. An internal email from CEO Matt Furlong, as seen by Kotaku, alludes to 'headcount reductions' and cites high inflation and decreased consumer confidence as the reasons behind the layoffs. Furlong stated, 'We have recently completed several projects that were part of the initial phase of our transformation, enabling the business to operate more efficiently. Additionally, we have gained clarity on the appropriate level of corporate staff required to achieve our profitability and growth objectives. These factors informed the decisions made across the organization.' The current layoffs follow a previous round of redundancies in July, during which GameStop management emphasized the need for all employees to be more hands-on and accountable for results. The company also announced the departure of former CFO Mike Recupero at the time. In its most recent earnings report, which ended on July 30, GameStop reported losses for the sixth consecutive quarter but noted sales growth during a 'transitional quarter' for the retailer.
