UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to roll out a new educational venture called the Go‑To‑Market Academy, a business‑focused programme aimed specifically at supporting independent game studios based in the United Kingdom. The Academy is structured to give fledgling developers the practical knowledge and strategic frameworks they need to craft robust go‑to‑market plans and nurture sustainable player communities around their titles. At its core, the Academy seeks to fill a gap that many early‑stage studios encounter: translating a compelling game concept into a viable commercial launch. While creative talent is abundant in the UK indie scene, many teams struggle with the logistical and promotional aspects of bringing a product to market.

By offering a curated curriculum, the Academy provides a clear pathway from initial market diagnostics to the execution of targeted marketing campaigns, all while emphasizing the importance of community engagement on platforms like Discord. The curriculum is divided into six comprehensive online modules. The first module introduces participants to diagnostic tools and insight‑gathering techniques, helping studios assess their current position, identify target audiences, and understand competitive dynamics. The second module delves into the construction of a full‑fledged marketing strategy, covering topics such as brand messaging, channel selection, and budget allocation.

In the third module, participants learn how to design and run effective marketing campaigns, from teaser trailers to influencer outreach. A distinctive feature of the Academy is its dedicated focus on Discord as a community‑building hub.

The fourth module explores best practices for leveraging Discord’s suite of features—such as servers, roles, bots, and events—to foster active, engaged player bases. Studios are guided through the process of setting up their own Discord spaces, curating content, and facilitating meaningful interaction between developers and fans. The fifth module shifts attention to studio branding, teaching teams how to craft a cohesive visual and narrative identity that resonates across social media, press kits, and storefront listings.

Industry experts and guest speakers will complement the core teaching staff, bringing real‑world perspectives from successful indie publishers, marketing agencies, and community managers. These sessions are designed to provide actionable advice, case studies, and networking opportunities that extend beyond the virtual classroom. The Academy will admit a select cohort of ten to twelve studios.

The programme kicks off with an in‑person kickoff event held at EGX during MCM Comic Con in London next month, giving participants a chance to meet mentors, peers, and potential investors face‑to‑face. Following this launch, the remaining modules will be delivered online throughout November and early December, allowing studios to work at a manageable pace while still receiving regular feedback. The final phase of the Academy culminates in another live gathering, where each participating studio will present a comprehensive go‑to‑market plan that they have developed over the course of the programme.

These presentations will be based on a shared case study provided by UKIE and Discord, ensuring that every team tackles comparable challenges and can benchmark their progress against one another. Studios interested in joining the Academy can submit their applications via the link provided in the original announcement.

The application window closes on 30 September 2026, so prospective participants are encouraged to act promptly. "Go‑to‑market planning is where a lot of promising games fall down, not because studios lack good ideas, but because they haven't had the time or support to build the audience and community that gives those ideas a chance to flourish," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE. "The Go‑To‑Market Academy gives indie studios the space to work through that properly, with direct input from Discord on a platform that’s become central to how games communities actually form and grow." Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, added his perspective: "The UK's indie games scene is full of talent and opportunity, and we're delighted to partner with UKIE to help it thrive. We're excited to help this group of UK developers learn how to make the most of Discord to connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, build communities and grow their games." By integrating strategic marketing instruction with hands‑on community‑building tools, the Go‑To‑Market Academy aims to empower UK indie developers to launch their games with confidence, reach wider audiences, and sustain long‑term player engagement.

The partnership between UKIE, Discord, and GameFlex underscores a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of British gaming talent and ensuring that innovative titles have the infrastructure they need to succeed in a competitive market.
