Insider Trading Allegations Lead to Arrest of Sonic Creator Yuji Naka
Yuji Naka, the visionary behind Sonic the Hedgehog and a former Square Enix employee, has been taken into custody on suspicion of insider trading. According to reports from Japanese news outlet FNN, Naka's arrest is connected to a case involving Square Enix's collaboration with Aiming, a Japanese development studio. At the time of the partnership, which involved the development of Dragon Quest Tact, a mobile spin-off of the beloved Dragon Quest series, Naka was still employed by Square Enix. Allegedly, he acquired 10,000 shares in Aiming, valued at approximately $20,000, before the official announcement of the game. Additionally, two other former Square Enix employees, Taisuke Sasaki and Fumiaki Suzuki, who were arrested recently, collectively purchased 162,000 shares for around $337,250. It is speculated that the trio bought these shares in anticipation of a surge in stock price following the announcement of Dragon Quest Tact. The current status of these shares, including whether they have been sold, remains unclear. Naka's departure from Square Enix was publicly announced in June 2021, shortly after the release of his game Balan Wonderworld, which received unfavorable reviews. In a surprising turn of events, Naka later disclosed on Twitter that he had been removed from his position as game director about six months prior to the game's launch and had initiated legal proceedings against Square Enix to resolve the dispute.
