Xbox Releases First Transparency Report, Revealing 7 Million Enforcement Actions
Microsoft has published its inaugural Xbox Transparency Report, outlining the company's efforts to safeguard players from inappropriate behavior and misconduct on its platform. This report marks a new commitment to transparency, with Xbox aiming to release a games-specific report every six months. The decision to create a separate report stems from Microsoft's desire to build upon learnings from previous reports and provide more detailed insights into its moderation efforts. According to Dave McCarthy, General Manager for Xbox Product Services, this move reflects Microsoft's dedication to online safety and its responsibility to the gaming community. The report highlights key statistics from January to June 2022, including 7.31 million enforcement actions, 4.50 million player account suspensions, and 196,000 incidents of content removal. Notably, the number of enforcements has increased significantly compared to previous periods, largely due to Microsoft's investment in proactive enforcement technologies. The company's acquisition of Two Hat Software in October 2021 has enabled the automation of some moderation processes, resulting in a substantial rise in the removal of inauthentic accounts. The report also breaks down enforcements by policy area, with cheating and inauthentic accounts being the most common reason, followed by profanity, adult sexual content, harassment, and hate speech. McCarthy emphasizes the importance of striking a balance between healthy and unhealthy competition, particularly when it comes to profanity. The introduction of automation and Two Hat has led to a significant increase in proactive moderation, with January to June 2022 seeing nine times more proactive moderation than the same period last year. The report also notes a decline in player reports, with 33 million reports received in the first half of 2022, representing a 36% decrease year-on-year. McCarthy attributes this decline to various factors and stresses the importance of player reports in maintaining a safe gaming environment. The company will continue to release Transparency Reports every six months, reviewing and updating its Community Standards to ensure a safe and inclusive experience for all players.
