October Video Game Sales Mirror Last Year's Figures - NPD Report

According to the NPD Group, the total spending on video games in the US reached $4.3 billion in October 2022, remaining relatively unchanged from the previous year. The software segment experienced a 2% year-over-year increase, generating $4 billion in revenue. The month saw the launch of several notable games across various console platforms. The key findings for October 2022 include: total spending of $4.3 billion, which is flat compared to last year; software sales of $4 billion, representing a 2% increase; and hardware sales of $424 million, marking a 10% decline. On a year-to-date basis, total spending stood at $43 billion, down 7% from the previous year, with software sales at $37 billion, down 8%, and hardware sales at $4 billion, down 2%. The video game content market, encompassing physical and digital sales, subscriptions, and downloadable content, saw a 2% increase, reaching $4 billion. The PlayStation 5 led the console market in terms of unit and dollar sales, followed by the Xbox Series systems. The top-selling games for the month included Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Gotham Knights, and FIFA 23. Other new releases, such as NHL 23, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and Bayonetta 3, also ranked among the top-selling games. Year-to-date, the overall gaming market has declined by 7% to $43 billion.
