ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first-ever PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to take place in June 2027. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the PAX brand, which has long been associated with digital gaming conventions, by expanding its footprint into the analog tabletop arena once again. The original PAX Unplugged concept debuted in Pennsylvania back in 2017, offering a dedicated space for board games, card games, role‑playing games, and other non‑digital experiences.
Since that inaugural event, the tabletop sector has experienced steady growth, both in terms of product releases and community enthusiasm. "The tabletop industry continues to grow, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," explains Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for PAX, in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz. When the team began evaluating the possibility of hosting another Unplugged gathering, they weighed several major metropolitan areas. Key considerations included the level of interest expressed by existing exhibitor partners, the logistical capacity of each city’s convention facilities, and the overall demand from the PAX fan base.
"We were always partial to returning to the South," Gonzalez notes, "and after comparing a few options we were happy to find that not only was Houston the best place to launch a second Unplugged, but it was a chance to bring PAX back to the PAX South fans that missed us." The decision to bring the event to Houston carries extra emotional weight because PAX South, which previously served the region, was cancelled "for the foreseeable future" in 2021 after its final edition in San Antonio in January 2020. The cancellation left a noticeable void for gamers in Texas and the surrounding Southern states, many of whom had come to rely on the annual gathering for networking, discovery, and community building.
By choosing Houston, the organizers hope to rekindle that regional excitement and provide a fresh platform for tabletop enthusiasts. PAX Unplugged Houston will be hosted at the George R. Brown Convention Center, a venue known for its expansive exhibition space and modern amenities. The three‑day event is scheduled from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027.
Attendees can expect a bustling expo floor populated by a diverse array of analogue‑gaming exhibitors, ranging from indie board‑game designers to established publishers showcasing their latest releases. In addition to the vendor hall, the convention will feature a robust program of panels, live tournaments, community meet‑ups, and special events designed to cater to both seasoned hobbyists and newcomers alike. Beyond the core programming, the organizers are planning several new feature areas that will differentiate the Houston edition from previous Unplugged events. These include dedicated stages for live‑play demonstrations, a “design lab” where aspiring creators can receive feedback on prototypes, and a series of thematic lounges that celebrate various gaming sub‑genres such as legacy games, cooperative experiences, and narrative‑driven role‑playing adventures.
The goal is to create an immersive environment where attendees can not only play games but also learn about the creative process behind them. Gonzalez emphasizes that the immediate priority is to ensure the highest possible experience for current exhibitors and attendees before contemplating further expansion of the PAX brand. "We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he says. This measured approach reflects a broader strategy within ReedPop to balance growth with quality, ensuring that each event maintains the community‑first ethos that has defined PAX since its inception.
The team also highlighted ongoing improvements across the entire PAX portfolio, noting that both the East and West coast conventions are receiving new programming tracks, additional stages, and enhanced expo layouts. "We're actively expanding the shows, introducing new feature areas, stages, and programming tracks at East and West, while constantly delivering a great expo hall with new games for fans to discover," Gonzalez adds. He further acknowledges the resilience of the gaming community, stating, "We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX. Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever." Ticket sales for PAX Unplugged Houston are slated to open later this year, accompanied by a call for media and content‑creator applications.
Organizers anticipate strong demand, given the pent‑up enthusiasm from Southern gamers who have been without a major PAX event for several years. The inclusion of media passes and creator opportunities underscores the convention’s commitment to fostering a vibrant ecosystem of coverage, streaming, and community‑generated content. In summary, PAX Unplugged Houston promises to be a landmark gathering for tabletop enthusiasts, offering a richly curated expo, engaging panels, competitive play, and numerous opportunities for community interaction. By returning to the South and selecting a city with the infrastructure and enthusiasm to support such an event, ReedPop and Penny Arcade aim to revitalize the regional gaming scene while staying true to the core values that have made PAX a beloved institution worldwide.
