Sony's PlayStation Revenue Surges to $8.8 Billion in H1
Sony's latest financial report reveals a significant boost in sales across all sectors, although operating income in the gaming division has decreased. The company's Q2 revenue reached ¥2.75 trillion ($18.6 billion), representing a 16% year-over-year increase, with operating income at ¥344 billion ($2.3 billion) and net income at ¥264 billion ($1.7 billion). For the first half of the financial year, revenue was ¥5.1 trillion ($34.5 billion), up 9% year-over-year, with operating income at ¥651 billion ($4.4 billion) and net income at ¥482 billion ($3.2 billion). The game and network services segment saw a 40.5% decline in operating income, primarily due to increased game development costs and acquisition expenses, including the $3.6 billion purchase of Bungie. However, revenue in this category grew 75.3% to ¥720 billion ($4.9 billion) due to favorable foreign exchange rates. The PlayStation 5 has sold 5.7 million units since the start of the financial year, with 3.3 million units sold in Q1 and 2.4 million in Q2. Sony also reported sales of 62.5 million software units, including 6.7 million first-party titles, with 63% of software sales being digital. The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has decreased slightly to 45.4 million. For the full financial year, Sony expects revenue to reach ¥11.6 trillion ($76.6 billion), with the gaming segment projected to contribute ¥3.63 trillion, a 10% increase from the previous forecast.
