Netflix Expands Gaming Portfolio with Acquisition of Spry Fox

In a recent move to bolster its gaming division, Netflix has acquired Spry Fox, the renowned developer behind Cozy Grove and Alphabear. As the company's sixth in-house studio and fourth acquisition since September 2021, Spry Fox is set to enhance Netflix's game catalog with its unique brand of 'cozy games'. According to Vice President of Game Studios Amir Rahimi, the acquisition will accelerate creative development in a beloved genre, further diversifying Netflix's gaming offerings. In a blog post, Spry Fox CEO David Edery reassured fans that the studio will maintain its focus on creating non-violent, enjoyable games, with ongoing projects including Cozy Grove 2 and a yet-to-be-announced MMO. Edery emphasized that Netflix's ownership will provide the studio with the necessary resources to refine its games and share them with a broader audience. The team will no longer need to worry about profit generation, instead focusing on crafting engaging experiences for players. Additionally, Spry Fox will have the opportunity to collaborate with other creatives within Netflix to refine its craft. As Netflix approaches the one-year mark since introducing games to its platform, the company has made significant strides in expanding its gaming portfolio. With 35 games currently available to subscribers and 55 more in development, including 14 within its internal studios, Netflix is poised to become a major player in the gaming industry. The acquisition of Spry Fox is the latest in a series of strategic moves, following the purchase of Night School Studio, Next Games, and Boss Fight Entertainment, as well as the establishment of new studios in Finland and Southern California.
