Disney Open to Collaborations with Indie Game Developers

Following its decision to cease in-house video game development and revert to a licensing model, Disney has made significant strides in the gaming industry. The company's pivot has led to the creation of various successful games based on its iconic brands, including Spider-Man and Disney Dreamlight Valley, developed in partnership with renowned publishers such as EA, PlayStation, and Ubisoft. Disney's growing presence in the gaming sector was further solidified by its first-ever video games conference at the D23 event. Sean Shoptaw, senior vice president at Walt Disney Games, expressed his enthusiasm for the company's current trajectory, stating that collaborating with top developers and publishers worldwide has revitalized the business and yielded higher-quality products. At D23, Disney announced two new games from indie developers, Bithell Games and Dlala, demonstrating its willingness to work with smaller studios. Shoptaw emphasized the importance of passion and creative excellence in potential partners, rather than their size or experience. He noted that Disney is open to working with talented indies, regardless of their background, as long as they demonstrate a genuine passion for the company's IP and a clear vision for their project. The company's approach to licensing is inclusive, and it prioritizes empowering creative teams to produce original stories. While Disney does seek out developers, the most successful projects often arise from pitches made to the company. Shoptaw highlighted the need for potential partners to have the expertise to execute their vision and bring a title to life with the desired scale and quality. Disney's vast array of IP, including new additions on Disney Plus, is available for smaller teams to work with, and the company is willing to consider partnerships with indies for any of its characters and worlds. The company's gaming strategy is multifaceted, encompassing various genres, business models, and platforms, and it is committed to continuing to push the boundaries of the industry.
