Comcast Discontinues G4 Operations One Year After Revival, Resulting in Staff Layoffs

Just one year after its revival, G4 is ceasing operations. A memo from Dave Scott, chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectator, informed employees that all G4 activities are being terminated immediately. Scott described the decision as "very difficult" and attributed it to G4's failure to meet expectations, citing low viewership and unsustainable financial results. Despite efforts to generate interest, the network was unable to achieve satisfactory viewership, leading to financial instability. The shutdown affects several dozen employees and contract workers, with some being considered for roles within other parts of the company. The news has been met with disappointment from the G4 team, with many expressing frustration on social media. This development follows layoffs last month, which saw up to 30 staff members let go. Earlier this year, G4 president Russell Arons also departed. G4TV initially launched in 2002 and operated until 2014, when it was shut down due to the rising popularity of online video content. It was relaunched in November 2021 with a mix of cable TV programming and Twitch livestreams, backed by a multi-year agreement with Twitch and pay-TV distributors including Verizon FiOS, Cox, Xfinity TV, and Philo.
