Steam Introduces New Charts Feature to Showcase Top-Earning Games

Valve has introduced a new Steam Charts feature on its digital marketplace, providing users with a more comprehensive overview of the best-selling and highest-grossing games available. This new section replaces the previous 'stats' page and offers real-time rankings of top-selling and most-played games, along with a weekly chart and monthly summary of new releases. The top-selling list is calculated based on the total revenue generated by each game, including full-game purchases, downloadable content sales, and in-game transactions. This list also includes free-to-play titles and pre-orders, such as the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. If a specific downloadable content is performing exceptionally well, it will be displayed as a separate listing. Valve's goal is to provide a more accurate picture of which games are currently popular among players. The revenue-based calculation method will also be applied to other sections of Steam, including the Top Sellers tab on the homepage and genre-specific pages. Steam has featured Top Sellers lists for over a decade, but this update brings several improvements to the ranking system, including the ability to view how many weeks a game has been on the chart, its position change from the previous week, and the option to switch to country-specific charts. The weekly charts will be updated every Monday at 10am PT to show the top 100 best-selling games based on revenue. Additionally, users can browse through previous weeks' charts, with the historical archive dating back to 2005, when only three games were available: Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike, and Counter-Strike: Source.
