Shuhei Yoshida Emphasizes Premium Game Releases Over Subscription Services

During GI Live: London, Shuhei Yoshida, head of PlayStation Indies, discussed Sony's strategy for its revamped PS Plus service, particularly the top-tier Extra subscription. Yoshida stated that Sony still believes in releasing titles as premium products at launch, unlike Microsoft's approach with Game Pass. The previous PS Plus model allowed some games to debut on the same day, contributing to their success by providing access to a large audience. However, the new multi-tier PS Plus offers a different approach. Yoshida explained that the added value for developers and publishers lies in providing an additional revenue stream later in a game's lifecycle, similar to the film industry. The new PS Plus has multiple tiers, with the Extra tier offering a catalog of hundreds of games. Yoshida emphasized that this approach helps publishers manage a game's lifecycle, introducing titles to new audiences after their initial release. He cited the example of Stray, which was released day-and-date on PS Plus Extra, demonstrating the potential for success with this model. Yoshida's comments align with those of PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, who expressed concerns that including games in subscription services at launch could negatively impact their performance.
