US Video Game Revenue Sees 5% Decline to $4.10 Billion in August

The US video game market experienced a slight decline in August, with total spending reaching $4.10 billion, a 5% decrease from the previous year. However, this figure is still higher than the $4.07 billion recorded in August 2020. The NPD Group attributed the decline to a decrease in software sales, which fell 6% to $3.6 billion. In contrast, hardware sales saw a 14% increase to $375 million, driven by improved supply of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Year-to-date spending has reached $34.6 billion, down 9% from the same period last year, but 3% higher than in 2020. The PlayStation 5 was the top-selling platform in August, while EA's Madden NFL 23 was the best-selling game, followed by Saints Row and Marvel's Spider-Man. Mobile game spending declined 10% year-on-year, with Google Play users experiencing a 22% drop in spending. Accessory sales also fell 18% to $138 million, due to decreased sales of controllers and headsets.
