The Sims 4 Adopting Free-to-Play Model Eight Years Post-Launch
Electronic Arts has revealed that The Sims 4 will transition to a free-to-play model starting October 18, allowing new players to access the base game without charge across PC and console platforms. According to the company, the decision to adopt this model stems from the enduring creativity of its community, which has produced billions of unique Sims, countless stories, and impressive builds, inspiring the company to broaden its reach. "The Sims 4 has been a testament to the power of community and creativity, and we're excited to welcome even more players to experience the game without any initial cost," the company stated. Initially released on September 2, 2014, The Sims 4 has undergone numerous updates and expansions over the years, with additional content available for separate purchase as outlined in the announcement. Notably, acquiring all available DLC for the game on Steam would currently amount to nearly $1000, highlighting the game's extensive post-launch support. In a recent conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, Maxis producer John Faciane and senior game designer Jessica Croft discussed the Sims series' evolution into a more inclusive gaming experience, including the introduction of features allowing players to assign preferred pronouns and specific sexual orientations to their Sims.
