Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal Regain Control of Iconic IPs

In a significant move, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal have reassumed control of various gaming intellectual properties from their former owner, Square Enix. Notable franchises now under their ownership include Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and more. Crystal Dynamics, which developed several Tomb Raider games between 2004 and 2016, has regained control of the series, as well as the Legacy of Kain franchise. In a statement, the studio announced that it now owns these games and has control over gameplay and associated personal data. Similarly, Eidos Montreal has reclaimed ownership of the games it developed, including Deus Ex and Thief, and now controls the data generated from gameplay of these titles. This development follows Embracer's acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal, along with their respective properties, in a $300 million deal earlier this year. Embracer CEO Lars Wingfors has emphasized the importance of these traditional IPs, stating that the company will prioritize their care and management, with a focus on meeting reasonable expectations and achieving satisfactory financial performance.
