Frontier Developments announced a landmark set of financial results in its June trading update, highlighting a dramatic improvement in profitability for the fiscal year ending 2026. The company reported an adjusted operating profit of £21.4 million, which represents a 62 percent jump from the previous year and stands as the highest adjusted operating profit ever recorded in Frontier’s history.

This impressive figure was achieved despite the exclusion of a one‑off £3.9 million windfall that the firm received last year from the sale of publishing rights; when that exceptional item is stripped out, the adjusted operating profit more than doubled on a year‑over‑year basis. Revenue also saw a healthy rise, climbing 16 percent to £104.8 million. The bulk of this increase was driven by continued strong performance from the Jurassic World Evolution 3 title as well as the ever‑popular Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo franchises, which together continue to attract large, dedicated player bases and generate steady streams of income through expansions, downloadable content and in‑game purchases. Operating profit, which includes all core business activities, grew an even more striking 97 percent to £25.0 million.

Frontier explained that this surge reflected not only solid underlying trading performance but also a one‑off transitional tax credit of £4.4 million that boosted the bottom line for the period. The company attributed the overall growth to three key pillars: strong trading performance across its portfolio, disciplined cost control measures, and a higher level of tax and expenditure credits secured from governmental programmes designed to support the UK video‑games sector.

By keeping operating expenses in check while still investing in new content and technology, Frontier has been able to extract more profit from each pound of revenue. Leadership changes were also highlighted in the update. Dan Lazarides joined the executive team last month as chief marketing officer, bringing a fresh perspective to the studio’s brand and community outreach efforts.

Meanwhile, founder and long‑time president David Braben announced that he will step down from his executive duties on 1 October 2026 to become a non‑executive director. Braben will retain his title as president and will continue to provide strategic oversight, particularly in areas related to game design and intellectual‑property stewardship. Strategic partnerships formed another cornerstone of Frontier’s outlook.

The studio recently signed a multi‑year agreement with Disney to develop and publish a new title that will leverage Disney’s extensive portfolio of intellectual property. While details of the project remain under wraps, the collaboration signals Frontier’s ambition to broaden its reach into family‑friendly and blockbuster‑style gaming experiences. Looking ahead to the product pipeline, Frontier confirmed that Planet Zoo 2 is slated for release on 13 October 2026. The sequel is expected to build on the original’s success by introducing deeper simulation mechanics, expanded animal collections, and enhanced ecosystem management tools.

In addition, the studio is working on Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Deathwatch, which is slated to launch before the close of FY27, further diversifying Frontier’s catalogue with a high‑profile licensed property. A notable strategic focus for the company is its Content Management System (CMS) game initiative. Frontier is currently developing a new CMS‑based title built around its own intellectual property. The project is "in full development and is on track," according to the update, and the studio aims to deliver an average of one CMS game per year.

This approach is intended to create a steady flow of new experiences that can be updated and expanded over time, fostering long‑term player engagement and recurring revenue. CEO Jo Cooke summed up the year’s achievements, stating: "FY26 was a landmark year for Frontier. We delivered record financial performance, demonstrated the strength of our CMS strategy, and continued to invest in the world‑class franchises our players love, supporting vibrant communities and long‑term engagement across our portfolio.

With a strong balance sheet, a talented team, and an exciting roadmap ahead, we are well positioned to deliver sustainable growth, enduring player value, and long‑term returns for our stakeholders." President David Braben added his perspective, expressing pride in the company’s trajectory: "I am immensely proud of what our talented teams have achieved together since I founded Frontier in 1994, and excited about the opportunities ahead. I have tremendous confidence in Jo as CEO to build on Frontier's strong foundations and deliver long‑term success, together with the excellent leadership team. This transition allows me to concentrate on what I can do to help that journey, including oversight of our games, and I look forward to continuing to support Frontier and Jo in the years to come."
