Keywords Studios has announced the creation of FreeAnimal, a consolidated organization that brings together seven of its previously separate creative agencies under a single banner. The purpose of this new structure is to provide developers, publishers, and brand owners with a single, streamlined point of contact for all of their creative and marketing needs. The seven entities that now operate as part of FreeAnimal include the creative studios Ichi, KWM, Fire Without Smoke, and Gnet, as well as the media‑production houses TrailerFarm, Maverick, and Big Farmer. Together they form a geographically diverse network with offices in Los Angeles, London, Brighton, Montreal and Quebec City, allowing the new agency to serve clients on both sides of the Atlantic and across North America.

Each of the seven firms posted coordinated announcements on LinkedIn, signalling the start of a new chapter in which they will function as a single creative agency rather than as independent partners. Existing contracts with current customers will continue unchanged, while future projects will be sourced from the combined talent pool and resources of the FreeAnimal organization. "Collectively, we work with the world's most ambitious gaming brands," said John Rosenberg, Global Head of FreeAnimal. "By fusing seven agencies' perspectives, geographies, and experiences from across the games industry, we've created a wildly effective creative organisation that combines boutique strike teams with global scale." Rosenberg added that FreeAnimal will operate under the mantra "The Right Team for Every Game," a philosophy that emphasizes assembling the appropriate specialists at the optimal moment to address each client’s unique challenge.

This approach is intended to blend the agility of small, focused teams with the reach and capacity of a worldwide operation. Keywords Studios itself was founded in 1998 as an outsourcing specialist.

The company began an aggressive acquisition strategy in 2014, starting with the voice‑production studio Liquid Violet. Since that initial purchase, Keywords has added roughly 70 companies to its portfolio, expanding its capabilities across a wide spectrum of services that now include audio production, art creation, localisation, quality assurance, functional testing, engineering, player support, trailer creation, marketing, and data analytics. The most recent additions to the Keywords family, both completed in 2024, are Certain Affinity—a co‑developer on the Halo franchise—and Wushu Studios, a work‑for‑hire studio that focuses on a variety of production tasks. Earlier in the year, Keywords also merged two of its public‑relations agencies, Fortyseven Communications and Indigo Pearl, after Fortyseven opened a new London office, further consolidating its communications expertise.

The formation of FreeAnimal reflects a broader trend within the gaming services sector toward integration and simplification. By uniting multiple specialized firms under one umbrella, Keywords aims to reduce friction for clients who previously had to coordinate with several separate vendors.

The new structure also enables the company to cross‑pollinate ideas and best practices across different regions and disciplines, fostering a more innovative environment. From a practical standpoint, the consolidation means that a game developer looking to launch a new title can now approach a single account manager at FreeAnimal and receive a full suite of services: from concept art and cinematic trailers to localisation for multiple languages, community management, and post‑launch support.

This end‑to‑end offering is designed to accelerate time‑to‑market while maintaining high quality. Industry observers have noted that the "boutique strike team" model—small, highly skilled groups that can be deployed quickly for specific tasks—has proven effective in the fast‑moving gaming market. By coupling that model with the global scale of Keywords' network, FreeAnimal hopes to deliver both speed and breadth, a combination that is increasingly demanded by large publishers and emerging indie studios alike. The agency’s leadership also highlighted the cultural benefits of the merger.

Each of the seven original firms brings its own creative DNA, regional insights, and niche expertise. By fostering collaboration among these diverse teams, FreeAnimal expects to generate fresh ideas that might not have emerged within isolated silos. In summary, FreeAnimal represents Keywords Studios' latest strategic move to streamline its service offering, enhance client experience, and position itself as a one‑stop creative partner for the gaming industry. The agency’s promise to deliver "the right team for every game" underscores its commitment to tailoring solutions to the specific needs of each project, leveraging a blend of boutique agility and worldwide reach.
