The Games Industry Must Step Up Its Environmental Efforts, Says UN
During a presentation at Devcom, Sam Barratt, chief of education, youth, and advocacy at the UN Environment and co-founder of Playing for the Planet, urged the games industry to take action against the climate crisis. Barratt, who co-hosted the talk with Lisa Pak from the UN, Xiao Wang from UNEP, and Dominik Kirner from Ubisoft, highlighted the industry's potential to lead environmental efforts. He stressed that the gaming community has evolved beyond mere entertainment, with players now seeking connection and knowledge, presenting a unique opportunity for the industry to promote environmental awareness and adopt sustainable practices. Barratt emphasized that every individual and sector must contribute to reducing emissions by 50% within the next eight years, stating, 'There's no exemption for the gaming industry.' He believes video games can be a powerful tool for transformation and encouraged the industry to take advantage of its vast reach to make a positive impact. The UN is eager to support the industry's leadership in this endeavor, recognizing the significant difference that can be made through collective action.
