Sega Expands Film Portfolio with Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone Adaptations

Sega aims to build on the momentum of its Sonic the Hedgehog film series with two new movie projects based on its iconic games. The company has partnered with PictureStart, the production house behind the upcoming Borderlands film, to develop cinematic adaptations of Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone. Space Channel 5, inspired by the 1999 Dreamcast title, tells the story of a fast-food worker who joins forces with a reporter from the future to save the world from an alien invasion using the universal language of dance. The film is co-written by Barry Battles, known for The Baytown Outlaws and Far Cry 5: Inside Eden's Gate, and Nir Paniry, who wrote and directed Extracted, with Paniry also set to direct. Takumi Yoshinaga, the original game's design director and writer, is involved in the film adaptation. Comix Zone, based on the 1995 Genesis game, follows a comic book creator and a queer writer of color as they find themselves transported into a comic book world. Mae Catt, with credits on series like Transformers, Spider-Man, and Young Justice, is writing the screenplay. Toru Nakahara, producer of the Sonic the Hedgehog films, will produce both projects, with Shuji Utsumi overseeing and Kagasei Shimomura, known for Thunder Force 6, working on Comix Zone.
