Diablo IV Will Not Feature Loot Boxes, Blizzard Confirms
Blizzard has provided assurance that Diablo IV, its forthcoming RPG, will not incorporate loot boxes or pay-to-win elements as part of its live service and monetization strategy. The game is set to be a full-price title, accompanied by a premium battle pass and a cosmetics store at launch, neither of which will offer 'pay-for-power' options. The premium battle pass will focus on aesthetic items, while a free tier will enable players to unlock items naturally without needing to purchase the premium upgrade. This free tier will also include gameplay boosts accessible to all players, useful for leveling up new characters. Additionally, the game will feature a shop where players can use in-game currency to buy skins and other cosmetic items, which will not provide any gameplay advantage and will not be exclusive to premium content. According to Kegan Clark, director of product for Diablo IV, 'Cosmetics provide players with more options to personalize their characters' visual appearance. Nothing available in the shop offers a direct or indirect gameplay advantage.' This decision follows Blizzard's recent removal of loot boxes from Overwatch, ahead of its transition to Overwatch 2, which will adopt a free-to-play model with a battle pass system and a new in-game currency for purchasing cosmetics. Earlier this year, the studio faced criticism for the monetization strategy in Diablo Immortal, which allowed for significant spending on microtransactions to max out a character or obtain rare items.
