Activision Blizzard's Q2 Results Disappoint Despite Diablo Immortal Launch
Activision Blizzard's second-quarter results were marred by significant declines in revenue, net income, and player base, despite the successful launch of Diablo Immortal in June. The company reported $1.64 billion in revenue, a 28% decrease from the same period last year, with bookings and net income also experiencing substantial drops. The Activision division struggled, with revenue down 38% year-over-year to $490 million and engagement continuing to decline. In contrast, the Blizzard division saw a modest increase in monthly active users, driven by the launch of Diablo Immortal and growth from Hearthstone. However, the company's overall performance was disappointing, with the only bright spot being the King division, which posted an 8% increase in net revenue to $684 million, driven by the continued success of Candy Crush. Looking ahead, Activision Blizzard expects revenue and earnings per share to continue declining in the second half of the year, but anticipates operating income to grow starting in the fourth quarter, with a strong pipeline of upcoming releases, including Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Diablo 4.
