Sony's PlayStation Revenue Decreases 2% to $4.5 Billion in Q1 Due to Sales Decline and Rising Costs

Sony has unveiled its Q1 financial results, revealing a slight downturn in gaming revenue. The company's Game & Network Services division generated ¥604.1 billion ($4.5 billion) in the quarter ending June 30, 2022, marking a 2% decrease from the same period last year due to increased costs and declining sales. However, the company reported an uptick in PlayStation 5 units shipped and PlayStation Plus subscribers. Overall, sales reached ¥2.3 trillion ($17.3 billion), a 2% year-over-year increase, while operating income rose 10% to ¥307 billion ($2.3 billion). The Game & Network Services segment saw sales decline 2% to ¥604.1 billion ($4.5 billion), with operating income plummeting 37% to ¥52.8 billion ($397.3 million). PlayStation 5 shipments rose 4% to 2.4 million units, while full-game PS4 and PS5 software sales dipped 26% to 47.1 million. The digital download ratio increased to 79% from 71% in the previous year. PlayStation Plus subscribers grew 2% to 47.3 million, and monthly active users decreased 3% to 102 million. Sony forecasts overall sales of ¥11.5 trillion ($86.5 billion) for the full year, a 16% increase, with operating income expected to decline 8% to ¥1.1 trillion ($8.3 billion). The Game & Network Services division is projected to see sales rise 33% to ¥3.6 trillion ($27.1 billion), with operating income decreasing 26% to ¥255 billion ($1.9 billion). The decline in gaming revenue was attributed to decreased sales of first-party and third-party titles, as well as add-on content. The company's increased costs, particularly for game development at major studios, also affected operating income. The impact of the gaming decline on Sony's overall results was offset by strong performances from its Pictures and Music segments. Sony revised its full-year outlook, now expecting sales of ¥11.5 trillion ($86.5 billion) and operating income of ¥1.11 trillion ($8.3 billion), down from the previously forecasted ¥1.16 trillion ($8.7 billion). The total consideration for the Bungie acquisition was ¥514 billion ($3.7 billion), including the purchase price and committed employee incentives.
