Microsoft's Gaming Revenue Sees a Dip in Q4, but Game Pass Subscriptions Surge

Microsoft has unveiled its financial results for Q4 and the full fiscal year, revealing a modest decline in gaming revenue despite overall company growth. The quarterly financials include: $51.9 billion in revenue, a 12% year-over-year increase; $20.5 billion in operating income, up 8%; and $16.7 billion in net income, a 2% rise. For the full year, the numbers are: $198.3 billion in revenue, up 18%; $83.4 billion in operating income, a 19% increase; and $72.7 billion in net income, also up 19%. The 7% decline in gaming revenue, amounting to $259 million, was anticipated and still yields over $3 billion for the Xbox segment in Q4. This decrease stems from lower engagement and monetization in both Microsoft's titles and third-party games, although Xbox Game Pass saw subscription growth. The partnership with Epic Games allowing Fortnite streaming via Xbox Cloud Gaming has drawn over four million players, with one million new to the Xbox ecosystem. Despite an 11% drop in Xbox hardware revenue, the Xbox Series X|S has outsold previous generations at this point and led the North American market for three consecutive quarters. Microsoft forecasts further single-digit declines in gaming revenue due to first-party content decreases but expects continued growth in Game Pass subscriptions.
